How to: Judge Analytics Walkthrough

Walkthrough

  1. Use Judge Analytics to look up Judge Lucy Koh
  2. From the Opinions tab:
    1. Create a list of Koh's decisions on motions to dismiss
    2. Create a list of Koh's decisions on motions to dismiss involving patent issues
    3. Identify two cases involving patent issues in which Koh granted the motion to dismiss and two cases in which she denied the motion
    4. Create a report of the cases in the list you created in 2(2)
  3. From the Analytics tab:
    1. Identify a case to which Judge Koh cites frequently when ruling on motions to dismiss
    2. Identify the language Judge Koh quotes or uses in her own opinions when citing to the case you found in 3(1)
    3. To what judge does Koh cite most frequently?
    4. To what judge does Koh cite most frequently when she considers Constitutional Law topics?
    5. Identify a jurisdiction other than the Ninth Circuit or Supreme Court to which Judge Koh frequently cites

Use Judge Analytics to look up Judge Lucy Koh

  • From the Ravel search bar, type the judge’s name, e.g., “Koh” or “Lucy Koh”
  • Select Lucy Koh from the drop down list

From the Opinions tab:

  • Create a list of Judge Koh’s decisions on motions to dismiss
    • Select the Opinions tab from the upper left hand corner; use the filters below to select Motions, and then the “Motions to Dismiss” button to achieve the list of ~200 Opinions Authored by Judge Koh on Motions to Dismiss.

  • Create a list of Judge Koh’s decisions on motions to dismiss involving patent cases
    • In the filters section, type the word patent into the Keyword Search field and hit enter to filter down the ~200 Opinions Authored by judge Koh on Motions to Dismiss to those with the keyword “patent”.

  • Identify two cases involving patent issues in which Judge Koh granted the motion to dismiss and two cases in which she denied the motion to dismiss
    • Multiple answers: from the center column of Opinions Authored by Judge Koh, select any cases to view more details about the case, including motion outcomes, on the right hand side.

  • Create a Report of the cases in the list
    • Select the “Create Report” button to generate a printable list of the cases in the Opinions Authored column

From the Analytics tab:

  • Identify a case to which Judge Koh cites frequently when ruling on motions to dismiss
  • Select the Analytics tab and remove “patents” from the Active Filters. Leave the “Motions to Dismiss” filter active. The resulting list of cases in the center column shows the cases Koh frequently cites when ruling on motions to dismiss.

  • Identify the language Judge Koh quotes or uses in her own opinions when citing to the case you found in 3(1)
    • In the right hand column, you will see more details about any case you select in the center column. Scroll down in the right hand column to view the language Lucy Koh uses when citing to the selected opinion. E.g., after selecting Manzarek from the center column, you can see Judge Koh repeatedly cites and quotes Manzarek as follows: “For purposes of ruling on a Rule 12(b)(6) motion, the Court ‘accept[s] factual allegations in the complaint as true and construe[s] the pleadings in the light most favorable to the nonmoving party.’”
  • To what judge does Koh cite most frequently?
    • Remove the Motions to Dismiss filter from Active Filters. Choose “Judges” from the View Most Cited buttons to see the list of judges to whom Judge Koh cites most often.
  • To what judge does Koh cite most frequently when she considers Constitutional Law topics?
    • Use the Topic filter on the left hand side to select “Constitutional Law”. The list in the middle will be filtered to display judges Lucy Koh cites most frequently on that topic.

  • Identify a jurisdiction other than the Ninth Circuit or Supreme Court to which Judge Koh frequently cites
    • Remove “Constitutional Law” from the Active Filters. Select the Jurisdictions button to view the circuits to which Koh frequently cites.
